Gomez, Rist, Rudy and Skelly all played important roles on the field on Saturday, and went out with a professional performance. So far, as a group they have gone 53-17-13 overall and 22-9-3 in BIG EAST play, and Gomez has amassed 36 career shutouts (a program record). Hopefully we haven’t seen the last of this group on Shaw Field! Continue reading →
I was proud of the team and how they responded in training over the last two weeks after dropping two consecutive league games. The entire squad pushed each other on a daily basis, stayed positive and came together to find two important results against two of the best teams in the BIG EAST.

We have just returned from Omaha, NE after a very hard fought 1-0 win over Creighton. Morrison Stadium is one of the crown jewel facilities in college soccer, and the energy from the 3,000 in attendance was driving Creighton forward all night long. Continue reading →
It’s been a hard week to get our head around, starting with trying to play meteorologist. The game Wednesday against Providence was a Twilight Zone affair before it even began, as we had to move our kickoff up to 10 a.m. in response to a massive storm that was forecast to blow through the DC area. The early kickoff presented an empty stadium to greet one of the league’s toughest opponents, and neutralizing our home field advantage was not what we were hoping for. Continue reading →
The DC area was getting a good soaking this weekend, so we happily spent Saturday in Chicago where it was a beautiful, crisp day. We played at DePaul for the first time in my nine seasons at Georgetown, and had to contend with a determined and physical Blue Demon team on a field that was, at most, 70 yards wide. We opened up BIG EAST play on Saturday against a quality Butler Bulldog team in Indianapolis, and came away with a 2-0 win. The Butler Bowl isn’t an easy place to play, but the boys settled into the game nicely after about fifteen minutes. Freshman Arun Basuljevic made his first start of the season, and did a great job alongside senior Tyler Rudy to control the tempo of the game in the middle of the park. Despite a 21 to seven shot advantage, and a lot of blocked shots, the score remained tied at 0-0 going into the last fifteen minutes of the match. Continue reading →
I told the team last week that soccer wasn’t a beauty contest, and they took it to heart by finding a way to win ugly. In fairness, William & Mary came in very organized and worked hard all game long. They did a good job in minimizing the impact of our attacking players, and made it hard for us to play through them. The hot day and the illness that has been running riot through our team took its toll on us, and it was the first day this year that we didn’t have our legs under us. Continue reading →
The team looked to rebound against one of the top teams on the west coast on Sunday. UC Irvine, ranked 9th in the country, visited the Hilltop with a beautiful fall afternoon as the backdrop. I felt we came out with a tremendous first half performance, and deservedly went up on another clinical goal by Allen. Continue reading →
UC Irvine, ranked 9th in the country, visited the Hilltop with a beautiful fall afternoon as the backdrop. I felt we came out with a tremendous first half performance, and deservedly went up on another clinical goal by Allen. To UC Irvine’s credit, they produced a very good second half performance to tighten the game up. In a carbon copy of the VCU game, however, we failed to extend our lead, and a counter attack from one of our corner kicks led to a game-tying goal with only about seventeen minutes to play. Home cooking is one thing, but getting cooked at home is quite another! Our home opener this past Friday saw the temperature and humidity make it feel over 100 degrees on the field. It didn’t deter a great Hoya Hooligans student group and capacity crowd of close to 2,000 come out to cheer the boys on. Continue reading →
