It’s a busy time on the Hilltop! The Hoya women are coming off an exciting weekend of racing, into finals (starting today), and racing at the Eastern Sprints this weekend on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, NJ. Continue reading →
The camaraderie at the boathouse and on the team is awesome to watch. We’ve had many practices now with all three varsity crews just duking it out for inches or seats in ways we haven’t had before. I’ve told the team I’ve been waiting almost four years now to see this level of intensity and depth. We need to see it more. I am deeply grateful for the hard work done by my assistant coaches, Steve Full and Jen Forbes, to help recruit and retain great people. Continue reading →
March finds the Hoya rowing programs facing a completely frozen Potomac and spring training fast approaching. Thankfully, this year we decided to move our training trip from January to March and head to Sarasota, Florida for spring training instead of staying in DC. The team is excited to fly to Florida for eight days of warm-weather rowing on the Manatee River. Continue reading →
We were happy with how the Champ Eight executed Sunday’s race. They rowed long and well and approached it all with the right attitude. We were slow off the line as we started, but put together some very fast splits through the third mile and through the finish, despite rowing lower than most crews through the body of the race and the sprint. Sam Smolka enters her senior year as a staple of the varsity eight boats. At the 2014 Head of the Potomac, Smolka rowed in the varsity eight, finishing in first with a time of 16:10. The Hoyas next race will be at the Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass., on the weekend of October 17-19. Continue reading →

In Florida, we had some of our longest and our best rows since I’ve been here. The level of quality, focus and intensity was high and consistent – which is challenging to do 2.5 hours into a 3-hour row. We were treated again to a delicious spread and an entertaining evening with local Georgetown alums Ed and Ted Baran and their families; we were grateful to be welcomed so warmly by fellow Hoyas. After three weeks off the water due to the government shutdown, the Hoyas got back in boats in Boston at the Head of the Charles and on the Potomac this past weekend. The shutdown kept us busy training indoors and busing to the Anacostia on the weekends. Continue reading →
